A VIDEO ESSAY ON BALLROOM
FRI 4/19 | 4:30 PM - 6:00 PM | GROUNDWORK
A video essay on the not so adequately represented and historical truths of ballroom and vogue. This video essay includes topics delving into, not only its history, but the appropriation of ballroom, the differing times this niche culture reached a mainstream status, and the critical fabulation of what happened to the 13 year old and 15 year old kids briefly featured in the 1990 cult classic and documentary “Paris is Burning”. Alongside the beloved documentrary, I edited together archival footage, footage from Beyonce’s tour, shows Legendary and Pose, archival images, and more. This video is not only a historical narrative, but a highlight on the lives, figures, and events not written into history books — and it focuses more on the imagery and importance of black and brown joy, queer joy, rather than continuously retelling and sharing the overwhelming amounts of trauma, oppression, and violence these minoritized groups often face for existing freely as themselves.

The event was a collaborative effort between The Westport River Watershed Alliance (WRWA), the Westport Land Conservation Trust, and Wampanoag Experience. It involved the ceremonial burning of a traditional mishoon. Annawon Weeden, a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe, and Andre StrongBearHeart Gaines, Jr., from the Nipmuc Nation, along with various tribal and non-tribal supporters, skillfully oversaw the mishoon's burning, which lasted 24 hours a day for a full week. The general public was encouraged to attend, providing an opportunity to gain insights into Native American traditions. Once the mishoon was completed, it became the focal point of the River Day festival, held on Saturday, June 24, 2023, at the Head of the Westport River.
